This rare Scotch is one pricey potable

If Santa gives you this gift for Christmas, you've really been exceptionally good this year: A bottle of 81-year-old Scotch sold for $54,000 earlier this month at New York's first liquor auction since Prohibition.

It became the most expensive bottle of Scotch whisky ever sold by the auction house, said Christie's, which has been holding similar sales in Europe for a decade.

UK broadcasters pitch again for HD spectrum

Executives from ITV, the BBC, Channel 4 and Five have met Broadcasting Minister Margaret Hodge in a last minute plea for guaranteed spectrum to supply free high-definition television. They fear mobile phone companies will outbid them, leaving Sky and cable as the only available routes for those customers wanting HD.

Their "HD For All" pressure group wants a third of the capacity between 470MHz and 862MHz set aside for HD broadcasts on Freeview. The group, which also includes manufacturers and retailers like DSG International, says that would be enough to support five new HD channels. HD For All stepped up its lobbying campaign ahead of a critical deadline next week. Responses must be in then to Ofcom's proposals on the broadcast spectrum that comes free between 2008 and 2012 as terrestrial television converts to digital.

Hewitt looking for lucky break

For the draw ahead, there is a long way to go before I have to worry about the big names just yet. I'm hitting the ball pretty well at the moment in practice.

"If I can take that into the match court, then I'll be feeling pretty confident."

Getting to the second week looms as a potential problem, given Hewitt will have to play either 2006 runner-up Marcos Baghdatis or former winners Thomas Johansson or Marat Safin in the third round.

Hewitt would rightfully feel confident against Johansson given a 5-1 record, but Baghdatis beat him in their only match at Wimbledon two years ago and Safin famously denied him in the 2005 Open final.

Hewitt yesterday dismissed suggestions he had copped a poor hand with the draw.

"Last year I played (Fernando) Gonzalez in the third round here," he said.

Meters For Homeless Donations Haven't Stopped Panhandling

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - Chattanooga's merchants say old parking meters meant to collect donations for the city's homeless have not done much to discourage panhandling. Program coordinator Karen McMahon says people aren't using the recently installed meters very much because they don't know about them. She expects that to change when the city launches an educational campaign about the meters next year. McMahon says she does not yet know how much money the meters have collected for the homeless. Organizations sponsoring the meters have donated $10,000 to the program.
