Recitation of honorees so lame it hurt
The good news about last night's horrible, shrunken Golden Globe Awards broadcast is that it might have been bad enough to help end the strike. Surely the networks and producers don't want to see that embarrassment replicated for the Oscars in late February. The Golden Globes Winners Special that aired on NBC -- the result of threatened pickets and star no-shows for a traditional event -- was hosted by Nancy O'Dell and Billy Bush of Access Hollywood, two people definitely in need of writers. The vapid duo stood on a podium in a studio and, with no sense of pomp, recited the nominees and winners as if no one were watching. (Which, when ratings come out today, will probably prove close to true.) Immediately after announcing the first award -- best supporting actress for Cate Blanchett -- the duo discussed why someone else (Amy Ryan) should have won.

Gadgets Scientists Devise Brighter LEDs via Nano-imprint Lithography
The LED, or Light Emitting Diode, has been around since the late 60's but only over the last few years have LEDs made headway into commercial mainstream use. Some new vehicles now use LED's in headlights and taillights. The benefits of this are brighter light and much improved life span for the bulbs. Some stop lights also use LEDs to combat against the hazard of a stop light burning out. Of more interest to technophiles is the advent of LEDs for use as backlighting in our notebook computers, such as the recently announced Dell Latitude XT tablet PC, and other personal electronic devices. LEDs promise less power consumption in out notebooks thereby increasing battery life. LEDs are also slowly making their way into our flat panel TVs such as the Samsung 31-inch OLED panel DailyTech reported on last week.
Survey: Experts tell how to get the word out and bring business in
"Public relations" can encompass investor, employee and community relations. Many use it to mean media relations, or generating news stories. Having a third party talk about a company, service or product gains credibility. But there's no guarantee the message will get picked up and no control over what the media says. PR works best when the message is truly newsworthy. Advertisements, on the other hand, transmit the message exactly how the advertiser wants it -- the advertiser has complete control. By paying for a spot, the advertiser ensures it is featured where it wants to be seen. A bigger news story won't bump it off the page or off the air. Often, both can be used. Media relations and advertising support each other and achieve greater results when used in concert than they ever would on their own.
